Literature Review: The Effects of Nicotine Usage on Mental Health in Adolescents
This Literature Review is a comprehensive analysis of existing research on the relationship between nicotine usage and mental health in adolescents. Constructing my first literature review equipped me with knowledge on a new research methodology that I would move on to use many times throughout college, and likely in my future career. Through this process, I learned how to search various medical and psychological databases, and pull key information from numerous sources into one thorough review. In my analysis, I utilized many health theories, such as the Social Ecological Model, to explain the connection between mental health and nicotine usage in adolescents. Additionally, concepts such as Self-Efficacy shed light on why adolescents are partaking in certain health behaviors. Based on the evidence gathered, it was concluded that in the future educational settings are best for intervention among adolescents, and parental pathways play a crucial role in aiding in mental health improvement.
Public Health Issue and Scope - Adverse Childhood Experiences
This descriptive presentation was designed to explain the definition and scope of a specific public health issue - Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). This project put emphasis on key concepts that are integrated within public health including the Social Determinants of Health, political viewpoints, and prevalence of ACEs in different areas. During my research, I gained a deeper understanding of what ACEs are and how important they are when gaining perspective on a patient, and in turn how important it is to gain background knowledge in general when working in healthcare. Given that almost 65% of all adults in America experience at least one ACE, this is a prevalent issue that is important to be knowledgeable about, and this project definitely helped me to achieve that
